While going on a camping trip isn’t something we can do right now because of the national lockdown, it is something we can plan for later in the year. Indeed, proper planning is the key to just about any camping trip with the kids. The good news is you can get some super tips and tricks for camping success in my post below.
Do a trial run!
First of all, if you’re looking for camping trip success, then it’s wise to try putting up your tent and sleeping in it beforehand. Indeed, this is the one thing you can do right now, as the back garden is the perfect spot to have a dry run. Although, some extra blankets and hot water bottles will be needed if you are to brave the January cold!

The great thing about having a trail run is that you can learn a lot. For example, by trialing putting your tent up beforehand you will know if any pieces are missing, or any bits that are particularly tricky and need practice before they are done in the field.
Additionally, you can see how well the kids take to sleeping in a tent, and make adjustments before your real trips such as investing in extra ground mats, blankets, and noise-canceling headphones. After all, some little ones just can’t sleep when there is noise, even if it is from their siblings snoring!
Pack the right things!
When camping with the kids it is so important to pack the right items. That is not to say you have to pack everything you own, as it’s well worth checking what the campsite you will be staying on has available before you leave.
However, some things are always essential such as waterproof clothes and shoes for the whole family. Pillows, sleeping bags, and a washing up bowl and liquid are pretty vital too!
Also, do not forget that having some simple activities for the kids to do in case of boredom can head off a lot of problems before they become an issue. With that in mind, some playing cards, and some colouring books and crayons are a smart idea.
Make meals easy
Part of the fun of camping is cooking outside, and there are so many wonderful things you can try. However, for maximum success, it’s always better to keep things as simple as possible.

That means using something like one of these camping stoves to cook on, and opting for easy one-pot meals. You can even get ones that are ready prepared and packaged so they last a while without refrigeration.
Prioritise setting up camp
No one wants to be stuck in the great outdoors without a warm, safe dry space to retreat into in the dark or if the weather gets bad. That is why you must prioritise getting your tent set up.
Of course, this should be easier as you will have already done a trial run. You can even get the kids involved too by assigning them age-appropriate tasks like collecting firewood and unpacking your vehicle. Then they should be nice and tired when bedtime rolls around!
