AD Gifted Experience, Nene Valley Railway, invited us to the Christmas At The Railway special preview event ahead of its opening to the public.
Nene Valley Railway have outshone itself again with its Christmas offering this year. Christmas At The Railway: Santa’s Reindeer Rescue is an immersive experience with a visit to Santa and a return train ride included. We were lucky enough to be invited along to their special preview event.

Our time slot was 1 pm with the train departing at 1.40 pm. This gave us plenty of time to go through the experience and meet Santa before heading onto the train. I would advise getting there early to account for the road closures on the A1 because you could find yourself taking a wrong turn and getting stressed out like I did! We did manage it and arrived on time, if not a little flustered.
The immersive experience begins before anyone even boards the train. Children are invited to join the elves in a playful but purposeful mission: finding the missing reindeer magic that keeps Santa’s sleigh flying. Rather than simply watching a performance, families are encouraged to participate and get hands-on. This includes making your own reindeer food. Each child was given a bag to fill using the scoops provided. There was a mixture of oats, popcorn and pretzels to put in the bag. Making it super safe to sprinkle outside on Christmas Eve.
Every area is so beautifully decorated, I was completely in awe of literally everything I could see. From walking through the wardrobe, Fluffy coats included, to the tumbling letters to Santa falling out of the postbox. The effort that has gone into this is incredible!
The visit to Santa was another hit for us, from being greeted by Mrs Claus, who invited us into Santa’s Grotto to talk to us whilst waiting for our turn, to Santa, who welcomed the children and gave them their gifts. Spoiler: 7 year old received a box of different fidget toys, 10-year-old received a pack of metal pull-back cars. It was a lovely experience and we didn’t feel rushed through either, we were able to spend as much time as we wanted and take the photos we wanted too!
When we walked through to board the train, the children were given a small activity book and crackers. We were then shown to our table, where there was a small pot of coloured crayons. The children enjoyed doing their activity packs and opening their gifts. I took the opportunity to go and get some drinks, included in our experience was a free tea or filtered coffee and small flavoured water bottles for the children. We ended up buying hot chocolates and cookies as extras. If you wanted to take food with you, you could alternatively, when you order your tickets, there is the opportunity to order pre-ordered food to your table.
Staff, from the elves to the railway volunteers, are friendly, patient, and clearly passionate about creating a special experience for every visitor. If there is one minor drawback, it’s that popular time slots can feel busy, but the staff manage the flow well, and the cosy atmosphere ultimately feels more festive than crowded.
Overall, the Immersive Christmas at the Railway event at Nene Valley Railway succeeds brilliantly as a magical family Christmas outing. With its blend of storytelling, creativity, Santa visits, and the timeless charm of a steam-train ride, it offers a warm, memorable experience that children and adults alike will treasure. It is, without doubt, an event worth making part of your annual festive tradition.
