The Queens Head

Up until our visit I hadn’t stepped foot in The Queens Head. Despite living in Peterborough all my life and seeing the building every time I was in town, I had always assumed it was just a pub. Which until a few years back that was pretty much exactly what it was. However, now it is known for its artisan pizza, one-pot meals and their craft beer. We were invited to come as a family to try their new summer menu.

Our Meal

The boys LOVE pizza, if you ask them what they want for tea I can almost guarantee that it would be pizza they would want. So I kinda knew already that The Queens Head would be a hit for them. When we arrived we were greeted by Liam who I had spoken to through email, it is always lovely to be able to put a face to a name. Liam then introduced us to Jenner who was going to look after us. Jenner was really lovely, very outgoing and bubbly! She took our drinks order and then gave us a few minutes to look over the menu.

Our visit was the first day of their new summer menu so I was really keen to see what they had on offer especially for the boys. At The Queens Head, the children’s meals all come with a free drink and a free scoop of ice-cream making it really great value for money. The pizzas are all made to order so any changes can easily be made. The boys all ordered the Margot Pizza’s which was Mozzarella and Basil. Oliver who is a little more adventurous ordered the Toni, Spicy Pepperoni, Mozzarella and chilli peppers, minus the chilli peppers. Mark and I went for an Aloha each, pulled ham hock, mozzarella and caramelised pineapple, it sounded lovely on the menu.

Wood Fired Pizza Oven

What I really loved was the wood-fired pizza oven which takes pride of place. It is out in the open for everyone to see and you can watch your pizzas being cooked.

Considering they were making 5 fresh handmade pizzas it didn’t take long for our meal to arrive. There was a slight mix up with Oliver’s pizza and he was given an adult pizza rather than the children’s one. We were all so surprised with the size of the pizza and Mark and I was thinking maybe we should have ordered just one to share. We knew Oliver wouldn’t be able to finish it however he proved us wrong, and he ate the lot!

The pizza that Jack and Arthur had was a decent size too! It didn’t take us too long to get through our pizza and finish it off. We had also ordered a side order of Garlic and cheese flatbread, I think we were being optimistic and had really underestimated the size of the pizza we would be receiving. We did ask Jenner if it could be boxed up and we took it home.

Desserts

Pretty much the best part of any meal is the pudding. Unless you want Gelato or Sorbet there isn’t much choice, in fact, there are 2. The Chocolate Brownie and the Treacle and Apple Tart, however, the Chocolate Brownie was literally to die for. The best tasting chocolate brownie we have had in such a long time. I was slightly jealous of both Mark and Jack who had ordered the brownie. I had ordered a raspberry sorbet and Arthur had gone for a vanilla gelato and even though it wasn’t the brownie it was still really refreshing and rather quite tasty too.

Overall

We all really loved our experience at The Queens Head. Jenner was really lovely and couldn’t do any more to make us all feel welcome and comfortable. The food was really tasty and great value for money! I think realistically we would probably share a pizza rather than ordering a whole one to ourselves and make use of the sides, although there are no fries anywhere on the menu (rather refreshing to see). Having the pizza oven out in the open to see was great! I think children would love to sit and watch their pizzas being cooked. The boys kept asking to go and get a closer look however it was rather busy with a large group so it was something I said we could do next time.

I feel like we only really tried such a small part of what The Queens Head offers. I would love to try some of their one pot meals and even their craft beer and with 2-4-1 on Mondays it becomes a great place for a childfree evening as well. The beer has such a lovely story, it is crafted at their Grandfather Charles Wells’ brewery in Bedford so it’s all rather local*ish to Peterborough too.

I was also impressed with the number of Vegan options. Although I am not vegan I have friends and family who are, So I am always on the lookout for places to take them out too. I think my brother would be rather impressed with it all!
