Gifted Stay | Our weekend at The Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds

We were gifted with complimentary stay, dinner and breakfast at The Angel Hotel

A couple of weeks ago we were invited to visit Bury St Edmunds, staying in the marvellous Angel Hotel. We were all really excited about our visit and the boys were equally excited for a couple of nights in the hotel. Mark and I are always apprehensive when it comes to the boys and visiting places. Although they are well behaved out and about there is always that little niggle when of course, children will be children. Looking online The Angel Hotel looked impressive and it had us slightly worried, how family-friendly they were going to be. I needn’t have worried.

The Angel Hotel

From the outside, The Angel Hotel looks glorious, dressed in Ivy it certainly stood out from the rest of the buildings. The moment we pulled up we were all in awe of the building and our expectations were suddenly blown away. Parking at The Angel Hotel was really easy. There is a small carpark within the grounds however there is also a larger pay and display out the front. We left the car in the capable hands of the concierge who also kindly carried our bags to our room. After we checked in we made it upstairs to room 218, the William Tassel Suite.

Our room

The room was really big and spacious, despite the sofa bed being made up and another camp bed that had been brought in, there was still plenty of space. Our room also had a really lovely decent sized ensuite. My only little niggle would be the placement of the toilet, It is right behind the door. However, that is made up by the big bathtub, separate shower and his and her sink! It really was lovely.

Our room also had a wardrobe, sideboard as well as a desk and chair for work. Thankfully I left my laptop at home as I was planning on making the most of being all relaxed.

Inside every room at The Angel Hotel you can find tea and coffee making facilities. Ours was located within the sideboard (underneath the TV). If you need anymore then a quick call to reception and they come and refill it all for you. There is a hairdryer and robe (ours was located within the wardrobe) and you can also call down to reception to request an iron and ironing board.

Once we arrived and settled in our room we set off to explore the town. The Angel Hotel is situated right in the centre, making it the perfect base to explore the city!

Dinner at The Angel Hotel

The Angel Hotel has an onsite restaurant called The Eaterie. Now, those of you who know my family, will now that Mark is rather fussy as are the boys. So something we do before we eat somewhere new is to find a menu so we can preplan what it is they would be eating. Online The Angel Hotel has a sample menu of some of the food on offer. The sample menu for me sounded wonderful! I had an idea what I wanted to order and I kind of figured out what Mark would eat too. However, there wasn’t anything advertised online for children so I spent the run-up to our visit a little concerned there wouldn’t be anything to eat.

As we were here for a review we didn’t have to pay for our dinner, however, we did have to pay for our own drinks. 

Our mains

I didn’t have to worry about the boys and the food available to them. They were given a children’s menu which had some pretty great options. Jack chose to eat Sausages, mash and peas whereas Oliver and Arthur went with Ham, egg and chips. Both really safe choices for them. Mark and I went for battered Haddock with triple cooked chips and pea puree.

Rather than ordering starters, we opted to receive a basket of bread. The boys were starting to become really hungry so I was pleased to go with an option that came out really quickly. As for drinks, the boys each had a glass of blackcurrant, I opted for a white wine with lemonade (I am not a big drinker) and Mark went for a bottle of lager.

We prepared ourselves for a bit of a wait with the food, so the boys each brought a book with them. It helped to pass the time and gave them all something to do. We didn’t have to wait too long for our mains and it all looked delicious! Jack wasn’t entirely keen on his mash potatoes but everybody else finished their plates.

The Dessert

When it came to dessert Jack and Arthur opted for a Chocolate Brownie and Vanilla Ice-cream. Oliver went with a Rocky Road Sundae, Mark went for White chocolate and mango cheesecake, mango sorbet and baked white chocolate. My choice was Lemon tart, yoghurt ice cream and meringue shards.

Our evening

After our meal was finished we headed back upstairs. The boys got dressed in their pj’s and Mark and I just spent the evening talking. One of the downsides to all sharing one room is there is nowhere to escape. There was a TV within the room, however, it was rather oddly placed. We couldn’t lay in bed and watch TV and if the sofa bed was away I doubt you would actually have been able to watch it from the angle of the sofa. We decided to call it a night and headed to sleep.

The bed was really comfortable and the pillows really soft, really cocooned my head! The boys all had a really lovely night sleep too and woke up full of beans. Our plans for the day was to head to Planet Laser and then onto West Stow Anglo Saxon Village.

Breakfast

There was an option to have breakfast in our room and in all honesty I kind of wish we did. We headed downstairs to eat breakfast, Mark and I both had a Suffolk Grill and the boys had boiled egg and toast. Jack opted for sausages, scrambled egg and beans. We also opted for some toast for the table so the boys had something to eat whilst we waited for breakfast. It arrived soon after and we all tucked into our food. Everyone finished their plates, except Jack who wasn’t keen on the scrambled egg (seriously, no pleasing everyone in the family). The food was lovely!

We headed back upstairs where we got dressed and ready for the day. I hopped into the shower, which was lovely!! One of the best showers I have had. The towels were a really decent size and super soft! Checkout time wasn’t until 11 am which gave us plenty of time to wake up and get ready.

Checking Out

It is always really sad saying goodbye to somewhere great. All of us really enjoyed our stay at The Angel Hotel, Mark and I commented about coming back without the boys just for a night away. Bury St Edmunds isn’t far from Peterborough (around an hour and half) so it makes it a great option for a quick weekend away.
