Choosing BoxRoll a UK Manufactured, Toilet Roll

The Mum Diaries      Leave a Comment

We paid for BoxRoll Toilet Paper and decided to write a review – So this is not an AD nor has it been sponsored.

Toilet Paper, probably one of the most wasteful things we will ever buy. Of course, I mean there is the alternative to reusable toilet paper, Family cloth, and although It did cross my mind a few years back, I just couldn’t. So trying to find a more environmentally friendly option has always been on my to do list. A few months ago we bought and tried Who Gives A Crap (WGAC), I wrote a review here. However one of the things that just didn’t sit right with me was all the air miles it was accumulating. A friend mentioned Rural Trading’s BoxRoll to us. So when we were running low on WGAC it was the time to try BoxRoll.

BoxRoll by Rural Trading

To place my order of BoxRoll I sent a private message through Rural Trading’s Instagram page. You can also email them to place an order too. It was a really simple process too. They sent me an invoice through my emails where I was able to pay for the order. There is a minimum 3 box quantity which means storing them all maybe an issue. We keep ours in the delivery box in the kitchen, it isn’t in the way so to speak, however it doesn’t look pleasing. You can however team up with family and friends and share the 3 boxes between you. It may mean a more regular order however storage wouldn’t be such a big issue.

There are 2 types of toilet roll BoxRoll currently offer. Recycled and Luxury, so when we placed the order we went with 2 x recycled and 1 x luxury so we could try them both. Being able to mix and match was great as it meant we were able to try them both out to find our preference.

Recycled – The Recycled option is made using 100% recycled toilet paper. It  is embossed with the same pattern as the luxury version. There are 300 sheets per roll and it’s 2 ply. The total measurement for it is 31.5 metres in length.

Luxury – The Luxury toilet roll is a lot softer to touch and despite being shorter in length, it is a larger roll due to being 3 ply. It measures at 17.25 metres in length so you don’t get as much as the recycled rolls.

The boxes each contain 24 rolls regardless of which one you choose. They also come unwrapped and loose in the box. The packaging is completely plastic free and the tape used is also vegan.

Our thoughts

We paid £39.40 for 3 boxes of BoxRoll, so a total of 72 individual rolls. They arrived via next day delivery with DHL and come in boxes of 24. Although storing all those rolls can be somewhat of an issue it can easily be solved by partnering with family and friends and sharing the costs too. I had imagined the 100%recycled toilet paper to feel like sandpaper, you know the type of toilet rolls we used to have in school or public places. However it doesn’t. Although no where near as soft as the luxury rolls it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I had imagined.

Environmentally wise, the toilet paper is made and manufactured right here in the UK. I sent Steve, the owner of Rural Trading a message to ask about the recycling process to find out whether all the materials they use are from the UK or whether it is imported. Steve said that wherever possible they use recycled jumbo paper reels manufactured in UK paper mills. It is then made into toilet paper. However thanks to Covid, and closures of toilet paper machines teamed with lack of demand it is becoming increasingly difficult. So when they need to they import the materials they need from Europe, no further.

This is mainly imported by sea freight, sometimes it is by road however it is never imported by air. All the production runs happen within the UK using paper mills from the UK however they have only once so far had to use recycled paper mills from a European tissue mill. However with alternative eco toilet papers being produced in China these still remains by far the most environmentally friendly option. Other than of course recycled cloth!

However, we need some more meal ideas to try and change things up. Do you have any suggestions?
