We were gifted with the 7 ate 9 Card Game.
As card games go, 7 ate 9 is probably going to be up there. After spending a couple of weeks playing non stop it has quickly become a family favourite. Even Arthur, who we thought would struggle, isn’t doing too badly. Now, he isn’t as quick as he needs to be in order to actually win a game on his own merit, but he is playing along.

What is 7 ate 9?
7 ate 9 is a fast paced card game. Using your maths skills you need to solve the sum in order to know which number card to place down. The teachers at school have put a big emphasis on doing mental arithmetic quickly. It helps children when answering questions to ensure they are reading the questions properly and answering correctly before moving on. So when we played the game I knew it was going to be handy. Especially for Jack and Oliver.

How to play
The game is really simple, you share the cards out equally amongst all the players and place a card in the middle. There are no turn takings if you know the answer and have the card be the first one to place it in the middle.
Every card will feature a yellow number, this is the main number and in either the top right, or bottom left hand corner there will be a sum. Either + or – and the numbers 1,2 or 3 will be beside it. Players need to quickly answer the sum on the card to know which card they need to place next.
For example if the card in the middle has a yellow number 4 with a +/- 1 then it would be the first player to place either a 3 or a 5 card in the pile. The first player to play all their cards win!

Sometimes you need to “go around the corner” when you play. This basically means if the number needed is greater than 10 or less than 1. If the total of the yellow number and the +/- number is greater than 10, simply subtract that number and play the corresponding card. For example 9+3=12, 12-10=2 so you would play a card with the yellow number being 2.
If the total of the yellow number and the +/- number is less than 1 then simply add 10 to that number. For example 1-2=-1, -1+10=9 so you would play a card with the yellow number being 9.
I can see this game becoming really popular with the boys even more so as Arthur gains confidence. When we go camping we often bring fun card games like this with us, so this will be making an appearance.
