Transitioning to a mum of teens!

How Life Events Affect Property Investment Decisions

Christmas At The Railway with Nene Valley Railway, Peterborough

Whats On | The best Pumpkin Picking Peterborough – The Mum Diaries

A whole week of Free/Low cost family days out and things to do!

     The Mum Diaries      2 Comments

When I started the blog I wanted to share as many free and low cost ideas as I could. Being a family of 5 with 3 children I appreciate how expensive the simple things can be. Money at the moment is extremely tight for many families thanks to Covid, and what with attractions suffering many losses, we need to make the most of what we have. So here is a whole week of ideas that your family could do! From the simple craft, to getting out and about! Even as a large family these ideas are low cost!

A whole week of ideas

I don’t know about you but during the summer the boys eat me out of house and home. Our lunches consist of “picnic” food, think sandwiches, crisps and a piece of fruit. It also means when we want to go out and about I don’t need to add any additional food to our shopping budget.

Monday – Picnic at Central Park

Central Park at the moment is the only “official” Peterborough play park that is open. With free parking around the outskirts you can make the most of the wonderful weather we have been having and meet with friends out in the open. Bring a football, Cricket or any other outdoor game to enjoy. Don’t forget the picnic blanket!

Tuesday – Railword

Railworld offers a really affordable morning/afternoon out with family. A Family ticket is £10 (2adults +3 children) and the wildlife is just brimming! From Model railways to a garden railway there is plenty to explore. Not an entire day out but it will certainly keep you entertained for the morning/afternoon. Pack another picnic or maybe head into the city centre after to make the most out of the Eat Out To Help Out scheme!

Midweek Fun!

Wednesday – Sculpture Trail

Peterborough features an array of different sculptures to spot. With a selection by the Rowing Lake, Nene Park. See and download the map here and count how many you can spot.

Thursday – Themed Movie Night

We love movie night. Nothing beats sitting together watching a film and pigging out on popcorn! Our favourite movie at the moment is Toy Story. Yup! It has been a constant hit in our house for years. To spice things up a bit we are planning a themed movie night, think slinky hot dogs and Hamms Pigs in Blankets. The boys are going to help to make some themed decorations too!

Friday – Get Crafty

Save up your cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and egg boxes and get crafty! The weather is going to be lovely, get out side and get creative! The boys love getting large cardboard boxes to make cars and houses out of them. Arthur has been playing with the action man dolls we have quite a bit so I was thinking of getting him to make a house for them. No idea how it will turn out though.

Weekend Ideas

Saturday – Have a socially distanced meet up with friends at Ferry Meadows

Ferry Meadows for us is always a big hit! I think it helps that it is literally on our door step so we try to make the most out of it as often as we could. If you are not local then there are car parking charges, however if you are local, bike/scoot/walk in. The play areas are all open and the little Ferry Meadows train is running too, (extra cost).

Sunday – Visit Nile Crocodiles

Less than 30 minutes outside of Peterborough is a little secret treasure! A completely FREE day out to see Nile Crocodiles. Yes, actual real life crocodiles! There is also an array of other animals you can see too from Meerkats, Snakes, Caimans and Goats etc. Johnsons of Old Hurst offers free entry so if you can leave a donation, visit the tea shop, butchers or farm shop.

However, we need some more meal ideas to try and change things up. Do you have any suggestions?

I'm not ready for this, to have all my children in secondary school and no one left in primary. It's been a journey, but boy is he ready for his next adventure!

I hope everyone got the options they wanted!
