Minimising Disruption When Extending Your Family Home

The Mum Diaries      Leave a Comment

Extensions to a property are wonderful, especially if your family is growing with new kids and pets
There has to be room for everybody. While these additions are golden opportunities, the construction work can be disruptive for the family. Parts of the home can be cordoned off, there can be loud noises, and overall it can just be slightly bothersome.

Still, these works can cause tensions. If neighbours are vying for a chance to express concerns about
extensions, then no doubt the people you live with may also have reservations.
So, how can you put minds at ease here? Here are a few options to help you minimise disruption
when extending your family home.

Consult Your Family

Disruption can be quite contextual. What’s mildly annoying one day may be far more bothersome
the next. For example, it was reported that exam stress for pupils was worse last year than before
the pandemic levels. If your kids are sitting important tests, the added disruption of building works
in the home may be far more aggravating than if the work were to commence during a quieter
period. It’s worth keeping factors like these in mind.

Therefore, you should consult your family before anything else. In their opinion, when is the most
convenient time to build an extension? Can you calmly set out your own preferences too? While you
believe you’re entitled to make changes to your property, you must do so with fair consideration
and be open to compromise.

Hire Quality Tradespeople

Rogue builders make life harder for everybody but themselves. A construction job is not something
you permit, as it can flout regulations, extend the duration of construction work, ramp up costs, and
even endanger the lives of you and your family. Always work with great tradespeople. If you need to find builders near you, look here and browse the work history, profiles, and reviews of many different vetted tradespeople.

You can also secure free quotes and learn everything there is to know about the builders you’re interested in before committing to hiring them. Some people rely on the recommendations of friends and family but try not to depend solely on those verdicts. Consult them as needed, but tap into a wider, verified consensus as well. Should both approaches lead you to the same local builders, so much the better.

Reorder Your Lives

You can’t necessarily press pause on your lives while extension work is underway. You and your
family must adapt instead. For instance, rooms may need to be repurposed. If pets get distressed by
strangers and loud noises, asking family friends to temporarily keep an eye on the creatures at their
house may be appropriate. If your kitchen and utility rooms are also out of action, then depending
on your personal network may be key. Alternatively, you could book a room in a local hotel or rent a
caravan.

Storage services may be able to protect some of your goods while work is underway, too. After all,
you don’t want your furniture and other items to gather dust or risk being damaged. Stash them away elsewhere instead. It can be a mild inconvenience, but these services can often be accessed at
any time, and it’s far less disruptive than permanent damages.
