Major Safety Issues To Be Aware of With a Newborn

The Mum Diaries      Leave a Comment

When you have a newborn baby to look after, it can be one of the most concerning experiences you can have. There is so much potential for stress, and it’s the kind of experience that can prove to be quite worrying a lot of the time. In fact, part of being a parent really is just learning how to cope with the stress of this. If you are a new parent and you are wondering about this, one of the main approaches is to make sure that you are aware of the major safety concerns that there are to think about.

In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the major safety issues that you should always be aware of when you have a newborn. As long as you are thinking about the following and doing whatever you can to mitigate the chances of anything bad happening, you will feel a lot better. Let’s take a look right now.

Burns

One of the most common safety issues that can crop up when you have a newborn is for them to receive a burn. This can happen in a lot of different ways and it’s relatively easy for it to happen, too, so that is something that you will need to be aware of. As it happens, there are a lot of ways in which you can hope to minimize their chances of being burned, so you should at least make sure you are doing these. For instance, you should take care with hot drinks, because these are some of the most common ways in which your baby might end up with burns. Make sure never to leave hot drinks somewhere where they might fall onto your child, or somewhere where they might be able to tip it onto themselves. As long as you do that, you are mitigating the number one way in which your child might get burned.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a real problem in the home, because it is deadly – and yet it’s odorless and invisible, so you won’t even know it’s present before it starts to affect the health of everyone in your home. This is why it’s so important to install a carbon monoxide alarm in your home, and to make sure that you are doing all you can to keep its batteries charged. Make sure you test it regularly to ensure that the batteries are working, at least.

Beyond that, there are steps you can take to minimize the chances of your home being filled with co2. For instance, you should make sure that there are clear vents, and that you are keeping the windows open a little every now and then, to ensure better airflow. If you can do that, it’s going to mean that your chances of carbon monoxide poisoning are going to be much lower, including for your baby too. This is a real concern, so don’t shrug it off. Make sure that you are taking the simple steps above, and all should be well.

SIDS

Probably one of the most common nightmares that new parents have is that of their newborn dying of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). This is one of the leading causes of death for newborns across the world, affecting about 3,400 babies every year in the US alone. There are a lot of different reasons that SIDS can happen, but one of the most common, and the one that you need to be most aware of, is allowing the baby to sleep on their stomach. This is one of the main risks of a baby sleeping on its stomach, and it’s something that you should absolutely avoid at all costs. It is much better to get them to sleep on their side or their back, and to ensure that they are not able to roll on to their front. As long as you make sure of that, you are taking care of the main cause of SIDS, so you will feel a lot better about the chances your baby has.

Choking

Another very common safety issue with newborns is the risk of choking. This can happen very easily with babies, especially once they start using their hands and wanting to put everything in their mouths. If your baby is getting to this stage, you need to make sure that you are helping them to avoid the possibility of choking as best as you can. Mostly, that is just a matter of watching them and making sure you don’t let them put anything in their mouth. As long as you do that, you are going to have a much better chance of keeping them from choking. Also, you should of course make sure to keep all small objects out of your baby’s reach as best as you can. If you do that, it’s going to mean that you are much less likely to have a baby choking on your hands.

Food Safety

You also have to think about food safety, and as it happens this is something that you might need to be aware of much sooner than you think. Food safety is important because you never actually know how your baby is going to respond to anything you feed them. This means that you need to take great care with watching how they react to whatever you feed them with. If you do this, you will soon get an idea of what their body likes and what it doesn’t, and that is a really important thing to be aware of. So make sure that you are paying attention to that, and all should be well with your baby. Those are just some of the major safety issues that you should think about when you have a newborn on your hands. As long as you bear these in mind, you should find that you are much more likely to keep your baby safe, and for them to be well and properly looked after.
