With the news that Trick or Treating is pretty much not going to happen this year It got me thinking. What can we do at home with our children that would still make Halloween fun! So here are 10 ways to have fun at home – Halloween Style!
10 ways to have fun at home
1. Movie Marathon!
There is literally nothing better than settling down with popcorn and treats for a movie marathon. Halloween is the perfect time to whip out those films that are a little bit scary or creepy. How about these;
- Nightmare before Christmas – don’t be fooled by the name, this is Halloween through and through
- Hocus Pocus – This is an absolute classic! Three Salem, Massachusetts witches have resurrected just in time for Halloween. Created by Disney, you know it’s going to be good!
- Coraline – Coraline has moved to a new house where she finds a door to another world where she meets her other mother.
- Ghostbusters – Who you gunna call? Ghostbusters!! This is another classic, perfect for children to get into ghosty films
- The Addams Family – Is it Halloween without The Addams Family?
2. Pumpkin printing!

Pumpkin printing is pretty easy! All you need is an apple or potato and paint. simply cut it up to resemble a pumpkin and print away! If your looking for some more ideas on crafts then check out my previous post here.
3. Host a party

I would never advise for you to break the law. So host your own party at home. There are some amazing food ideas on Pinterest however I created a post a couple of years ago with some great food prep ideas. You can read that here. The best thing about hosting a party at home is that it needn’t cost alot either!
4. Apple Bobbing!
When I was younger my mum and dad would do apple bobbing. Something really simple but it proved so popular with us! Depending on what you use, a bucket or washing up bowl you just add apples! To make it interesting you could always add an onion or too and use Jelly or Slime instead of water.
5. Carve a pumpkin

Of course, it wouldn’t be Halloween with a pumpkin! Halloween day maybe a little late to go pumpkin picking, (read here for a list of local Peterborough places) however if you have managed to get one you can spend the morning prepping it.
There is a new tradition being started this year to replace trick or treating involving pumpkins. Do you remember the NHS Rainbow trail back in lockdown? Where you would go out on your daily exercise walk trying to spot rainbows. Well, someone came up with the ingenious plan to do the same but with pumpkins!
6. Zoom Parties
Team up with school friends for a zoom party! The kids would love to see their friends and it would be a good way to still have some Halloween Spirit. How about hosting a fancy dress competition? or maybe a pumpkin carving competition?
7. Go Ghosting!
Another new tradition has started up thanks to everything going on. It’s called Ghosting! The idea being you leave a random act of kindness on someone’s doorstep. You could choose to leave a bag of sweets for a local family or if you know of someone struggling maybe a food parcel?
8. Trick or Treat – Jelly Bean tradition!
Have you ever had Jelly Beans before? You know the kind where it could literally taste of anything! B&M last year had these games called Double Dares which you could buy. The idea being you spin the wheel and you had to eat the jelly bean it told you too, but it could be something absolutely disgusting like snot or vomit or it could be lovely. You just don’t know! Amazon sell it here – Double Dare
9. Create a Halloween Playlist
No party is complete with a playlist or even just for background music on Halloween. If you can access Youtube on your TV the children would love some of the videos too!
- Monster Mash
- This is Halloween (Nightmare Before Christmas)
- Ghostbusters Theme
- Thriller – Micheal Jackson
- Somebody’s Watching Me – Rockwell
- I put a spell on you – Bette Midler from Hocus Pocus
- Magic Dance – David Bowie from Labyrinth
- Addam’s Family Theme Tune
- The Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show
- Bumps in the Night – KB Whirly
10. Halloween Baking!

There are so many different things you could bake Halloween style! From Eyeball Cake Pops to Spider Biscuits. The BBC Good Food website has some pretty awesome recipes!
