This year I have been really focussed on trying to reduce our family plastic waste and being more environmentally aware. One of the habits I have been looking to change is the way I shop. With that in mind, I have been looking at buying more locally. Not only am I supporting local farmers and shops but it also reduces air miles. Recently I was sent some British Piccolo Tomatoes.

Using British Piccolo Tomatoes
Gautier Semences is an independent family-owned company. For more than 60 years they’ve specialised in breeding, producing as well as retailing their really high-quality seeds. The seeds are then sent to UK farms for them to be sown into British Soil. Our Piccolo Tomatoes were grown at a nursery called Glinwell Nursery.
Gautier Semences has challenged me to use British Piccolo Tomatoes in a recipe. It didn’t take me too long to come up with a recipe I think my boys would love. Ketchup!
Making homemade Tomato Ketchup

All 3 boys are pretty obsessed with Tomato Ketchup and we can get through so many bottles! So it seemed an obvious choice. I spent a while looking up different recipes to find one using ingredients I already had. It seemed pretty pointless to have to go and buy more ingredients when I am trying to reduce waste.

I did find several different types so I thought I would try a couple of them and see which ones the boys preferred.
Recipe 1 –
Ingredients
- 500grams of British Piccolo Tomatoes
- 1 Onion
- 2 TBSP of Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1 TSP of Ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 TSP of Garlic Granules
- 1 TBSP Maple Syrup
- 1/8 Paprika
- Cornflour – If needed
Method
- Dice and fry the onion.
- Add the apple cider vinegar, ground cinnamon, garlic granules, maple syrup and paprika
- Boil the tomatoes for 8 minutes
- Blend the tomatoes
- Pour the tomatoes into the same pan as the onions and leave to simmer for 15 minutes.
- It should all start to thicken up, if it doesn’t then you can add some cornflour

Recipe 2 –
Ingredients
- 500grams of British Piccolo Tomatoes
- 2 TBSP of Apple Cider Vinegar
- Salt
- Sugar
Method

- Fry the tomatoes
- Add the Apple Cider Vinegar, Salt and Sugar
- Leave to simmer for 15 minutes
- Blend the tomatoes and use a sift to collect the lumps
- pour back into the frying pan to leave to simmer for a further 10 minutes to thicken the sauce.
- If the sauce doesn’t thicken then add some cornflour.

Overall
After doing some taste testing the boys decided they preferred the 2nd recipe over the first. My boys are really fussy and I don’t think they liked the added spice the ground cinnamon, paprika and Garlic gave the original recipe. I also think the maple syrup gave it a mustard taste.

The second recipe, however, has a better tomato taste. It is redder in appearance too. It certainly won top marks with the boys.
