AD | Choosing the right tent – 5 Top Tips!

     The Mum Diaries      1 Comment

With the new camping season well on its way, Mark and I have been looking at new tents. The tent we used last year was gifted to us by his dad as a Christmas present and it has lasted us well. However thanks to the damp it has started to have some mould spores appear. We have been looking at several brands such as Outwell Tents, from Simply Hike and they all seem great! However, choosing the right tent can be a minefield. So here are 5 tips to help you choose the right tent for you!

Choosing the right tent

  1. Separate Rooms – Rebecca from The Coastal Mummy says that separate rooms are a must. Everyone gets their own space and it is easier to organise everything you need to take with you. I agree! However, with 3 children it can be hard to find a tent with enough bedrooms for us all that isn’t huge either. When looking at the size of tents it is always worth buying one which sleeps at least one more than you need. For example, there are 5 of us, so when we buy tents we go for a minimum of a 6 berth.
  2. Can withstand the great British weather – Sarah from Kippers and Curtains says to make sure the tent is strong enough for the British weather. She also mentioned whilst she was camping the tent beside her started to blow away! I was always told to make sure when choosing a tent the Hydrostatic Head (the waterproofness) is over 3000.
  3. Sewn-in groundsheets a must! – I can’t agree more with Karen from That Lancashire Lass. Sewn-in groundsheets help to keep bugs from getting into the tent. It also helps to prevent draughts too!
  4. A Porch Area – Alana from Baby-Holiday says that a porch is a must have area. Porches are great and providing an outdoor area which is ideal for muddy and sandy shoes! The porch on our previous tent was a great place to cook. Being outdoors it is well ventilated but having a cover meant we were not getting rained on either!
  5. Space! – Jenny from TraveLynn Family says that indoor space is most definitely a must! If the weather is particularly bad you want to be able to all sit comfortably inside without feeling like you are all on top of each other!

Our bell tent is the best thing we ever invested in! It was expensive but it is so spacious and sturdy and we have used it about 8 times in the last 2 years.

However, we need some more meal ideas to try and change things up. Do you have any suggestions?
