Sausage Casserole – Winter warmer

     The Mum Diaries      4 Comments

You come in from the cold blustering wind outside to a house which smells of delicious food. You have been really busy all day and all you want to do is eat some hot filling food but you don’t want the hassle of cooking it!

Welcome to the world of slow cookers.

We were gifted our slow cooker from my mother in law a few years back and every now and again it see’s sunlight. I first started making sausage casserole when Jack was about a year old and he enjoyed it! I have loved making it ever since.

Sausage Casserole

Ingredients

Ingredients are pretty simple,

1 tin of chopped tomatos

1 tin of baked beans

Sausages (I add 2 sausages per person)

1/2 onion

Sausage Casserole
Browning off the sausages is an optional step. You don’t have too although i personally do!
Once browned put straight into the slowcooker.
I dont add any packets or tins to my casserole. Just 1 tin of chopped tomatos and a tin of baked beans. You can of course buy seasoning packs but my boys prefer it this way.
Chop one half of a whole onion
Add it into the slowcooker.
Stir it altogether i cook on high for about 3 hours then leave it on low throughout the day.

I add a side portion of creamy mashed potato when I serve the sausage casserole. Whilst preparing and cooking the mashed potato I turn the slow cooker back up to high. I leave the casserole cooking for about 9 hours which in that time it should be cooked! check the sausages are cooked throughout before serving though!

My family are pretty boring on the taste front so you can always add more ingredients to suit your own tastes. If I had my way I would be adding mushrooms, pepper ( I love pepper and can eat these until it comes out my nose!)  and potato.

If you have made sausage casserole let me know your thoughts? Do you add anything different?

Thank you! Sausage casserole was my favourite growing up and the best thing about it is you can add whatever you want. If you need more flavour then supermarkets sell a mix you can add. but in all honesty it tastes great without it too. x

However, we need some more meal ideas to try and change things up. Do you have any suggestions?
