Well, what a week we have had! Our trip to Wales had been booked months ago and it was a week we were all looking forward too. Mark and I were planning on meeting up with his dad and step mum who had booked an Air BnB. So we had a look at sites in North Wales and as we had stayed at Shell Island a couple of years ago, we wanted to be rather close by. One of the best things about camping is we can pretty much go anywhere! One of the places I had my heart set on was Merthyr Farm Campsite.
It’s funny, the whole disaster we had with our week the one thing that didn’t let us down was the site. Lizzie and Bryn from the moment I first contacted them were great! Although the initial email took a couple of days response it was early in the season and they are a working farm so all could be forgiven. Also, their website does also list contact numbers for quicker replies. We camp non-electric and all in all we booked a week at £22 per night. Which for August for 5 isn’t too bad!
Due to us having to cut our trip short I didn’t actually take any of the photos that I wanted. This wasn’t an official planned review and I wasn’t compensated for this either. However, Although our stay didn’t quite go to plan, the fact that they were both so accommodating and the site was really lovely I wanted to share with others.
Merthyr Farm Campsite
Merthyr Farm Campsite is in Harlech, Gwynedd, North Wales. For us, it was a 4hour and 15-minute journey, with no stops. However, realistically it’s about 4.5 hours closer to 5 taking into account roadworks on the M6 and a couple of toilet stops. It is made clear from the moment you book to follow their directions and not to follow your sat nav. So it is super important to follow their advice!
The Campsite has both electric and non electric pitches available. Whilst we were there we saw tents, trailer tents and caravans. We arrived in what was the start of high winds and was advised to camp in the nonelectric field (the field on the right) as it was the most sheltered. The field we stayed in wasn’t a particularly flat one and it seemed the best pitches were already taken. We decided to camp halfway down the hill on a flattish pitch and hoped for the best.
The facilities
The facilities at Merthyr Farm campsite are one of the best we have come across for a private campsite. The shower block has 4 decent sized toilets which were big enough to fit us in when taking the boys to the loo. It also housed 2 family sized shower rooms as well as a single shower room. In the same building was the dishwashing area with 2 sinks, washing machine, tumble dryer as well as a fridge and freezer (for iceblocks). The Washing machine and tumble dryer are coin-operated (£1). There are also plug sockets for free charging or whatnot. The Elsan disposal is located opposite the shower block and there are ample bins for both general and recycling waste. At no point during our visit were the facilities dirty. Literally the cleanest I have come across!
Our time
Unfortunately, everything seemed against us! From car troubles before we even left which delayed us by almost 2 days! to 45mph winds that damaged our tent. So we had to cut short our camp and it’s safe to say we were all gutted! Mark and I had been looking forward to our trip for a couple of months, and the worst weather in August happens.
The day after we arrived we had planned a trip to meet with Mark’s dad and stepmum. By following the sat nav we ended up watching a couple of farmers herd some sheep. It was such a lovely site to see and the boys loved watching them! There were times Mark and I thought we had taken a wrong turn (although we didn’t actually turn off anywhere) and ended up on private property. It wasn’t the case, we figured this must be the way the Sat Nav must bring you to the campsite that Lizzie and Bryn had advised not to take!
We have both said we would love to come back! I would prefer to be pitched in a different field next time, although the views were amazing! I would like to have been a little closer to the toilets. We don’t have a bad word to say about the Merthyr Farm, we loved it! Just a shame about the weather.
