Peterborough is such a beautiful city bursting with history and plenty of free places to visit. I must add although there is no entry charges to these places some do charge for parking. If you research the place a little though more often than not you can find a little side street to park but always check for signage for parking limitations.
My top 5 free places to visit!
- Visit Ferry Meadows – Ferry Meadows is such a beautiful place. Although they do now charge for parking. You can either pay when you leave or at home within 48 hours of a visit. Ferry Meadows is ran by the Nene Park Trust who looks after the park and the animals within the nature reserve. There are 3 children’s play areas with 2 of the areas recently refurbished. One of the parks called Otter Park (the boys favourite) is primarily just a large sand area with swings, a slide and a climbing frame. Ferry Meadows also offer Free duck feed too and a feeding platform in which to feed the ducks. There are planned activities which are on weekly as well as a water sports area, fantastic café and lots of walking trails.
- Visiting a Library – Peterborough has 10 libraries all over the city. All are free to access and join too! I love taking the boys to the library to just sit and read a book. They really enjoy choosing their books and it is something which puts an emphasis on reading. So it can’t be a bad thing! There are story sessions on throughout the week, Times and places can be found here.
- Peterborough Museum (Charges for activities) – The Museum is one of the most haunted places in the city and you can go on a ghost walk!(extra charge) There are some pretty amazing exhibits, including a Victorian operating room, interactive displays and lots more.
- Peterborough Cathedral – Peterborough Cathedral is bursting with history. This year ( 2018) the cathedral are celebrating 900 years! although a monastery was founded on the cathedral site in 655AD. There is plenty to explore and it is a great opportunity to see some local history. Peterborough Cathedral also recently launched their “Explorer Backpacks” which are free to hire (subject to a refundable deposit) the backpacks include everything you need to go on a tour of the cathedral. Inc, Magnifying Glass, Binoculars and Torches.
- Central Park – I love this place! In the summer it is great to just come and let the boys go and play in the paddling pool. There is a large enclosed sand area too (don’t forget to bring your bucket and spades!) Butterfly Café is also a lovely café which sells ice cream, cakes and drinks. There is a small aviary which houses some small birds which we love visiting. There are also (activities maybe charged for) bowling greens, hard and grass tennis courts, a putting green, a croquet lawn.
