My experience on pumping breastmilk

Pumping

When I was pregnant with Jack I brought a manual breastpump. I figured it would be nice for Mark to feed him, aswell as other close family. But when I sat to pump I would only get 2ounces a time. I felt really disheartened, how can I feed my baby 2oz of breastmilk! I tried to increase my supply but nothing seemed to work. Knowing what I know now about breastfeeding, I was really naïve to think that it wasn’t enough. Babies are a lot more effective at drawing the milk out, rather than using pumps.

When I had Oliver, I think I must have had an oversupply, as I remember being able to pump around 5oz in 10minutes. He loved expressed breastmilk from a bottle as much as from the breast! He really did take to bottle feeding easy and loved expressed milk. It was such a shame that due to medication I had to stop.

So when I was pregnant with Arthur, nothing was going to stop. I even brought an electric breastpump. Thinking if I got 5oz in 10 minutes from a manual, what could I get with an electric. I also brought my steriliser

Bucket and steriliser tabs.

5 minutes and 3oz, I was chuffed!!!
I started to express when Arthur was around 6 weeks, when breastfeeding from the breast was established. But the boy hated bottles!!
I tried all kind of bottles, but he refused all.
He would take a couple of sips then start pushing back.

I continued to pump! and kept trying with a bottle, he still refused. We tried all kinds of different brands and teats. He just didn’t take to bottle feeding. I had decided to build a nice stockpile of milk in the freezer ready for weaning.

No tips as I haven't been able to pump since the very early days of oversupply.

Choose a very quiet one, I did a lot of pumping at night 🙂

Stay hydrated and don't stress. I too have a complete bottle refuser and from 4 months started using a doidy cup occasionally.

I really struggled to pump, never managed to get more than 3 oz at a time, but I still pumped everyday.

Remember that not every woman responds well to a pump, and so the amount you can express is no measure of your supply.

Invest in a good electric pump unless you plan to only pump once in a blue moon
